Spotted: AHV on Wardobe Remix

We sold a lovely little plaid vintage day dress to a cute Etsy buyer a few months ago and shipped it off to Italy .. the next thing we know, she's been featured on the latest Wardrobe Remix roundup, wearing our dress!

I love perusing Wardrobe Remix for fashion inspiration, so it is fun to see some of our pieces making their way into the mix.

Shop Update: Gifts!

We thought we'd finally get a few things in the "knickknack" category, since the holidays are just around the corner.

Just in case you were wondering if that first photo was of some Hulkamania lunch sacks ... it is. Your sandwiches have never been so safe.

DIY: Pompom Christmas Wreath

One of AHV's favorite Etsyians, Yokoo (creater of the most fabulous oversized knit scarves and other accessories) has been discovered and exploited by Urban Outfitters ... to everyone's benefit!

She posted an easy tutorial on making this wonderful Soopa Pompom Christmas Wreath on their blog:

Of course, if I were that good with my fingers, I would make my own natucket cowl instead of scheming about how i can justify buying one from her.

Now you and your webcam can recreate the fun in this little french "photocabine."

Did I just waste an hour taking photos of myself? Maybe.

Thankful

I have a very long list of things I'm grateful for. I found this picture and it captures some things about this blog that I'm grateful for. I am very grateful to have great stylish friends like Bex, who live in SF with me, and love beautiful old clothes. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Best Gift Ever: 5 Year Diary

The holidays are upon us, and everyone will be hunting down the perfect gift. Make it easy on yourself - give everyone a Five Year Diary.

What is this magic journal, you may ask? The cute little book lets you keep track of your life with just a few lines every day for five years. Each page of the journal is devoted to one day of the year and subdivided into five sections, so that as time goes by, past entries for that same date can be read as new ones are written. In other words, you can see what you did on November 20 every day for five years running! Plus, even someone with as short an attention span as me can fill out a few short lines a day.

Of course, I was pretty excited when I stumbled upon a vintage five-year diary from the 30s in the thrift store. Turns out, they were kind of a big deal in the 20s and 30. Yet again - those brilliant folks of the past prove they had all the good ideas first.

You can often find really great vintage ones on eBay (though it can sometimes be tough to find them new and not written in by someone else's grandma).

This little red gem is available to bid on right now:

OR, there are a few cute new versions you can buy in bulk:

One Line a Day: A Five-Year Memory Book from Chronicle Books

And the best part is, whoever you give it to has to think about you every day for the next five years. (thanks to MLE for discovering these first)

Supplie(d)

I'm loving the "vintage vingettes" that ethanollie is putting together on etsy. Fantastic styling and a great idea for pairing vintage finds together to make a perfect gift.

Seeing Spots

I'm always a fan of DIY projects, which means of course I love the blog "PS, I made this." They always post some inspiration shots, and then a project that embodies those pics.

They posted a great tutorial the other day with an easy rip-off of some classic vintage hobnail. And, as they said, "Its the perfect way to re-purpose empty cans, bottles, containers without dropping a small fortune on pretty porcelain."

This will also give all that puffy paint that has been sitting in your craft drawer since the 80s a little purpose.

Trendspotting at Treasure Island Music Festival

Aubs and I shot some "street style" pics at last month's Treasure Island Music Fest for the NBC fashion folks. The fur, feathers and sequins were really flying.

See the whole slideshow here.

Since we usually just use one or two shots in the slideshow, I thought I'd give you a little more in depth look at some of my favorite shots:

I love that this outfit goes from summer to fall with one deftly placed vintage fur collared coat:

***

This outfit is just my style. At least for everyday casual wear. A little understated, but with a few key details that just really make it work. I like the little chains and jewels on her shoulders, that overnight-sized bag she is carrying, and those shoes are just perfect.

(Confession - after taking these shots, I went and bought some shoes like these at urban because although i missed the summer of outfit perfection they probably would have provided, it doesn't snow in SF so I have deemed them my perfect fall/winter shoe. And they are on sale.)

***

And THIS, my friends, is how you pull off one of those slightly oversized fur coats you find in the thrift store. Her hat and layered chains are perfect accessories, and of course, I can always get behind the shorts with tights look.

This hairstyle is really great. It looks like it would be simple enough to pull off, too.

Forever Stuck in the Background: Miranda July

I love when Miranda July gives us a little glimpse of the things happening inside her head.

She did this great photoshoot with Vice where she dressed up like forgotten background extras in old movies.

I know Halloween just passed, but it would have been fun to go as an impeccably dressed extra.
