Vintage Inspiration: HD Buttercup

HD Buttercup is a really lovely furniture store located in SOMA in San Francisco. Aside from being huge and full of the kind of furniture that is pretty enough to make you feel okay about dedicating your next several paychecks to it, they have worked in a lot of really great vintage decorating ideas that could be some DIY inspiration for around the home.

Vintage Inspiration - Moonrise Kingdom

I saw the lovely Moonrise Kingdom last week and was delighted to find it full of my favorite things - peter pan collars, vintage luggage and other old treasures, and animal masks.

In honor of Suzy Bishop, I put together a little vintage inspiration found on Etsy:

Sunnyside Up Dress | Toy Binoculars | Sunday Shoes | Yellow vintage luggage | portable vintage record player | Beetle earrings | Raven Mask | blue eyeshadow | Boy Scouts to the Rescue book | Vintage Red Plaid School Bag

Vintage Inspiration: Peter Pan Collar

I love collars.

Maybe on everything?

A neat little peter pan collar always catches my eye. I bought a pretty little stand-alone vintage pearl peter pan collar the other day, and like the idea of being able to stick a collar on anything that I already own (or even wear it with a low neckline as a necklace). Those ladies of the olden days had it right - just buy separate detachable collars and cuffs to change up a plain old dress instead of buying a dress every time you need something new.

A little collar inspiration today:

Vintage Inspiration - Fur

The wonky weather here in SF made us cancel this week's photoshoot (curses!), which means we will have to wait until after we get back from the 2010 Sundance Film Festival to make a long-awaited shop update.

In the meantime, I've been looking around at warm jackets to keep the chilly Utah snow at bay next week. The Sundance film fest always brings lots of people dressed in FUR ... often in really amazingly obnoxious ways, like huge Yeti boots and coats that look more like oversized polar bear costumes than anything.

I think there are a lot of ways to wear fur this season that look a little classier ... I always like a good vintage fur collar on coats, and there are lots of good synthetic furs that are being produced these days so that more little animals don't have to die in the name of fashion.

A few ways to wear fur without looking like a caveman:

Vintage fur collar/shawl (shawl with belt = so cute)

Vintage fur trimmed coats (apparently pants are optional ; )

Thankful

I have a very long list of things I'm grateful for. I found this picture and it captures some things about this blog that I'm grateful for. I am very grateful to have great stylish friends like Bex, who live in SF with me, and love beautiful old clothes. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Supplie(d)

I'm loving the "vintage vingettes" that ethanollie is putting together on etsy. Fantastic styling and a great idea for pairing vintage finds together to make a perfect gift.

Judging Books by their Covers

I know it is pretty hard to beat the loveliness of a dusty old hardcover book with beautifully embossed cover, but Penguin is starting to publish the classics in a new line of some of the prettiest hardcover books I've seen, rivaling those old vintage covers (designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith). I hear they sell out all over, but Amazon is releasing this set at the end of this month. Wuthering Heights! The Picture of Dorian Gray! Pride and Prejudice!

Doesn't it make you want every one of them lined up on your bookshelf?

(order them on Amazon here)

I dunno. On one hand, I'm glad that we are producing beautiful products (I mean, if you are going to own the classics, they might as well be really pretty, right?) but on the other, I feel like this is another case of ripping off the perfection of the past and making it easy to own these vintage inspired covers without all the hard work of searching for the real vintage books. I feel like many people would still argue that the old books are more unique and maybe preferable to these new ones. What do you think?

Perfect Swimsuit Day

I came across this photo on rachel's blog the other day and fell in love with the suits, the hairstyles, and the idea of lying with your other classy lady friends on the beach.

Buy a print of it here, and email me if you ever find a suit like the second from the right with a fantastic flame-like bodice. I'm serious.

Speaking of great bathing suits, I'm on vacation til June 28, so things will be a little quiet around here, but I'll get the rest of our accessories in the shop when I get back!
